North Curry Fire Bulletin

This monthly bulletin is designed to keep our community informed about the ongoing activities and services of the Sixes Rural Fire Protection District (RFPD), Langlois RFPD, Port Orford RFPD, and the Coos Forest Protection Association (CFPA). We sincerely appreciate the continued support of our community and value the opportunity to share updates from across the region.

Calls & Training

During the month of March, Sixes RFPD and Langlois RFPD each responded to three calls. On March 26 at approximately 8:45 a.m., Port Orford RFPD responded to a single-vehicle accident in Humbug Canyon involving a fully loaded chip truck that left the roadway and spilled its contents into Brush Creek. The incident significantly impacted traffic, with the roadway affected until 6:00 a.m. the following day. In total, Port Orford RFPD responded to 15 calls throughout the month.

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training, sponsored by REACH Cal-Ore Lifeflight, concluded on March 14. Sixes RFPD had nine participants complete the course, Langlois RFPD had five, and Port Orford RFPD had one. Additional participants included two members from Cedar Valley Fire, one from Ophir Fire, and one from Bandon Fire. We extend our sincere gratitude to Joe Gregorio, Debbie Andreson, Aubree Arneson, and the Cal-Ore Lifeflight team for delivering this high-quality training and sharing their expertise. We are proud to be part of such a strong and collaborative partnership.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s (OSFM) Office also completed a three-part training series focused on Emergency First Responder Resiliency. This program addresses mental health and stress management—critical components of firefighter safety and well-being. With firefighter mental health challenges, including rising suicide rates nationwide, this training plays an essential role in ensuring our personnel can continue to serve safely and effectively.

Additionally, the Coos Bay Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Team conducted a Hazmat Awareness refresher at Pacific High School for all three fire departments. This training provided valuable instruction on the identification and management of hazardous materials, helping responders better understand associated risks and enhance public safety. We greatly appreciate their continued support and expertise.

Looking ahead, the Sixes Combined Aquatic & Rope Rescue Unit (SCARR) will host a 40-hour rope rescue training from April 23 through April 27. Training exercises will take place at several high-angle locations, including Blacklock State Park, Cape Blanco State Park, and designated pullouts along Highway 101 south of Port Orford. Community members may observe training activities and are welcome to take photos; however, we ask that all posted safety barriers be respected for the protection of both the public and our personnel.

Upcoming Event: Easter Celebration

Easter is quickly approaching, and the Sixes RFPD Auxiliary is preparing for its annual Easter Celebration, which will be held at the Sixes Grange Hall on April 5.

This family-friendly event will include an opportunity to meet the Easter Bunny, enjoy a pancake breakfast prepared by local volunteer firefighters, and participate in an Easter egg hunt featuring more than 2,000 eggs—including several golden eggs with grand prizes.

Community members are also invited to sponsor a rubber duck for the 4th Annual Duck Derby on the Sixes River. The winning duck will receive a $100 cash prize and second place will receive a delightfully stocked gift basket sponsored by Rogue Credit Union. Ducks may be purchased ($10 each) by calling or texting Shayla at 541-297-4945.
