North Curry Fire Bulletin

This monthly bulletin is intended to keep our community informed about the ongoing activities and services of the Sixes Rural Fire Protection District (RFPD), Langlois RFPD, Port Orford RFPD, and the Coos Forest Protection Association (CFPA). We sincerely appreciate the continued support of our community and value the opportunity to share updates from across the region.

Calls & TrainingDuring the month of May, Langlois Fire responded to six calls, including a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident. Port Orford Fire responded to 12 calls, one of which involved an SUV and motorcycle collision in Humbug Canyon. Port Orford Fire would like to remind everyone that summer traffic is already increasing and that extra caution is always warranted in the Humbug corners, where the majority of vehicle accidents in the district occur. Sixes Fire responded to two calls, including a structure fire near Pacific High School. When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from several windows, and the fire had already extended into the attic space. Firefighters from Sixes, Langlois, and Port Orford responded to the incident, along with mutual aid from Bandon, which provided a water tender and a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) for interior operations. Additional assistance was provided by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), the Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA), the Curry County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, and the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM). No injuries were reported. Crews remained on scene well into the night to prevent rekindling and to support the OSFM investigation.

Sixes Fire has been training extensively in preparation for the upcoming wildland fire season and was awarded an OSFM Staffing Grant to help ensure adequate staffing for emergency responses. Recent drill nights have focused on wildland firefighting operations, pump training, annual wildland refreshers, and fire shelter deployment. In addition, nine firefighters dedicated a Sunday to reviewing pump operations and engine systems, while ten firefighters completed the annual Wildland Firefighter Pack Test at Pacific High School. This test requires participants to carry a 45-pound pack and walk three miles in 45 minutes or less, with no running permitted.

Upcoming Event: Hometown HeroesThe Sixes RFPD Auxiliary is pleased to announce the fourth annual Hometown Heroes Fair, 5K Walk/Run, and Car Show, taking place on August 15. This year’s event will feature a large exhibit from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) in the newly refurbished Community Building.

This festival continues to grow each year, and we are excited to partner with OMSI to offer engaging and educational experiences for attendees of all ages. The Auxiliary is currently seeking vendors. Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to contact Shayla at SixesRPFDAux@gmail.com.

Fire Season in Effect

CFPA has started fire season as of June 1^st at 12:01 am. We are currently in “low” and no burning is allowed. If you have questions about the levels or burn restrictions and when they change, feel free to visit their website at www.CoosFPA.net.

RecognitionSixes RFPD would like to recognize Firefighter Ivan Roos, who was promoted to Lieutenant this month. Roos joined Sixes Fire in 2017 after Chief Moore encouraged him to "come on down and train with us," and he has been dedicated to the department ever since. Prior to joining Sixes Fire, he served with CFPA for nine years, concluding his career there as an accomplished Forest Officer. Lieutenant Roos has been an invaluable asset to Sixes Fire, bringing extensive wildland firefighting experience, a passion for learning, and a natural ability to teach and lead others.

In addition to his substantial wildland firefighting qualifications, he is also a well-rounded structural firefighter, vehicle extrication technician, and driver/operator. He was among the first volunteers to join the SCARR Search and Rescue Unit when it was established in 2023. In that role, he serves as a rope rescue technician, wilderness first aid provider, rescue boat captain, and wilderness search and rescue specialist.

Always among the first to volunteer and assist wherever needed, Lieutenant Roos is a highly accomplished firefighter, valued community member, and trusted friend. In his own words, his favorite part of serving with Sixes Fire is "the camaraderie of my fellow firefighters on the department and the lifelong friendships I've made while serving our community together."
